A notice of a stranger's death sends meticulous pencil pusher Mr. Grey into the cavernous Parchmentwork Mines beneath Starharbor's Regional Justice Center, in search of decades-old paperwork - with a chatty coworker and a hasty balloon-elevator ride complicating his errand.
Chapter 2 - The Cubicle Hedge
Mr. Grey navigates the ever-shifting maze of his department's Cubicle Hedge, only to find his sanctuary invaded by Jodee Coats, a furious young stranger demanding a visa he has no authority to grant.
Chapter 3 - The Dragon Tram
Riding the Dragon Tram home through Starharbor's polluted slums, Mr. Grey falls into conversation with Bugwitch, a wily stoop-dweller whose hard-luck tale puts Mr. Grey's treasure - and his instinct for courtesy - to the test.
Chapter 4 - Workers' Prison
Alone at last in his cramped workers'-prison cell, Mr. Grey seeks the isolation he's craved all day - only to discover that solitude brings a discomfort of its own, and a mysterious invitation waits among his scattered papers.
Chapter 5 - Hootenanny
At a rowdy Starharbor tavern, Mr. Grey's evening among friends - including the sharp, ambitious Honeydew - is upended when a brawl erupts, forcing an unlikely escape through swarms of bats and rivers of roaches.
Chapter 6 - Jack York's Office
Summoned into his volatile boss Jack York's roaming glass office, Mr. Grey must account for his productivity and his run-in with Jodee Coats - and finds himself pushed toward an unexpected vacation.
Chapter 7 - Park Walk
A rain-softened park walk with Honeydew, complete with a wobbly steam-swan ride, brings Mr. Grey face to face with the flawless, self-mythologizing Lord Neon Silveste - and a courtship that feels harder to read than any parchment.
Chapter 8 - Fortune Auctions
Waiting in Starharbor's endless fortune-auction line, amid mounting public anger over rigged fortunes and murmurs of a legendary Odormoat-breaker, Mr. Grey finally wins - and reads - the fortune that will upend his tidy existence.
Chapter 9 - Tockwork Crags
Mr. Grey guides an overwhelmed stranger and, later, the ever-charming Lord Neon Silveste through the dizzying gearwork maze of the Visa Department's Tockwork Crags, showing a mastery of bureaucracy that reveals more about him than he intends.
Chapter 10 - A Day at the Beach
A jelly-sea beach walk with Honeydew, dodging waves and an approaching storm, turns quietly uncomfortable as Mr. Grey tries - and struggles - to say what he means before his coming vacation pulls them apart.
Chapter 11 - The Anchor Shawl
Caught up in a rain-soaked mob marching on the industrial district of Bleachgate, Mr. Grey is recruited by two opinionated old women into a strange bit of weaving - while unseen conspirators set something far more dangerous in motion.
Chapter 12 - The Wheelhouse
Battered and searching for Honeydew inside a dazzling wheelhouse, Mr. Grey stands atop the Great Wheel oblivious to fortune spinning around him, and finally works up the nerve to ask for something more than her company.

As Mr. Grey and Honeydew wait to board the marble train out of Starharbor, a last-minute send-off from boss Jack York turns stranger than expected, before the train itself hurls them toward the borders of Wine Medo.
Prologue - The Notice of Not Existing
